In Matthew 6:21, Jesus teaches, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Many people distance themselves from God by obsessing over earthly concerns: what to eat, what to wear, where to live, and how much wealth to accumulate for retirement. These earthly pursuits often lead to sorrow and anxiety, as they offer no true security, peace, or spiritual joy. When life ends, these treasures are left behind.
In contrast, heavenly treasure brings cheerfulness and gratitude. When we treasure Jesus and His promises in our hearts, we dwell in peace. As Isaiah 26:3 states, God keeps those whose minds are stayed on Him in perfect peace.
Society often measures a person’s worth by their material wealth, yet someone worth billions may possess nothing in the eyes of God. Conversely, those with few material possessions are often the most generous. Jesus noted the difficulty for the wealthy to enter the Kingdom of God, as riches can lead to stinginess rather than a heart for giving.
Consider the testimony of Dr. Leszek Gracz, a wealthy and influential Polish doctor who lived a life of excess and harm. After a near-death experience in which he witnessed the suffering of those he once admired in hell, he was granted a second chance through the intercession of his wife and church. He spent his final three years becoming “rich toward God,” serving His kingdom before departing in peace.
We must ask ourselves: does your soul long to be rich toward God? The world and its desires are passing away, and our time as stewards of our talents, strength, and property is limited. No one knows the hour of their departure. While we have the opportunity, let us serve the Lord with gladness and wholehearted devotion.
Pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened. Cry out to Jesus: “Lord, I know the day is coming when I will depart from this life. My desire is to fight the good fight of faith, finish the race You have set before me, and remain faithful. May my treasure be the crown of righteousness that You award to all who long for Your appearing.” Amen.
